I actually really like the phone design, it fits into a regular cellphone pocket on my purse and has a full querty keyboard, very easy to switch between letters and numbers input, the menus are great and straightforward, with no manual required. I think it won a design award. I would sure give it one, it's the most user friendly phone I owned.

I got an Android phone now, sim card switch went without a hitch and hacking it for 3G data worked too. I miss that little phone! It's waiting for it's turn to be used as Montreal number for my contacts there.

even on the iphone, browsing experience is still pretty bad. On my N7, it is kind of acceptable but not something I would do for too long. On a 10" tablet(except iPad 1/2), they are fine and is a reasonable device for regular usage but still lags behind laptop for quite a margin.

of course it is always YMMV.

Any sort of satisfying browsing experience has to be done on a phone that woudn't fit the price point of a SO phone.

They would have to sell a phone that would 'off contract' cost at least $300.

Which makes for an interetsing question. Of the prepaid phone plans out there, what's the cheapest, greatest smarphone out there.

It's certainly not the one phone that SO sells.

Personally, I think that all the phones that they've ever sold have had to be at a loss.

Never heard of Alcatel before this. It's purely a disposable phone i'm assuming.

On a similar note though. Can anybody chime in on it's MP3 media playing capability? I'm assuming that it's video playing capabilities are crummy as well.

Does it come with a memory card?

We got one just to get the sim card free, I tried browsing on it, what a joke. Anything is better, even our crappy old Nokia C3 is better. It is however unlocked which makes it perfect for a US trip phone.

This alcatel is a GSM phone, with EDGE data speeds, so it is and will be slow. I think around 20 kilobytes a second is the best you can expect.

so I have this Alcatel 356 phone and I bought a browsing plan. It's superslow, but I can access Gmail and Facebook ok, which is fine and everything would be ok if I could use the Google search! Anybody else has trouble with it? SpeakOut people sent me to Alcatel, they are closed now and I don't have high hopes.

On my default search page that gave me Google logo and the search button I could type in the search words ok, but then the cursor would not move to "search" button. I then decided to go and use regular Google web search page at http://www.google.ca does the same thing – "Search the web" button never becomes active no matter what I press on the keyboard – up, down, sideways, left soft key, right soft key.

I can use Gmail and Facebook ok.
