...The solution was to go into the phone and 'restore factory' settings. Be careful about phone number lists (contacts) and that sort of thing; because you will lose all your settings once you do this. Once the phone powered up it was operating as per usual. I have had no issues since.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, dh_mac. I restored factory settings, and all seems to be good with the phone for now. Didn't even lose any contacts. You saved me from having to toss this phone and get a replacement! So thanks again, and thanks to the wizards who created and run this site so we can all share intelligence.
Before I sign off, I do have one more question: anyone know if it's possible and how to raise the volume level on the earpiece? I know the loudspeaker can be engaged for each call, but I'd like to raise the voice level permanently so it's easier to hear people talk. As it is, it's very hard to hear people at the other end. Suggestions?

I'm not familiar with your 6519i, but when a contact is in your phone book, it should have a little sim card icon next to the name or number, or a little phone icon, so you will know where that number is stored.

I had M contact numbers on my 1661. I had no idea if they were on the phone or on the SIM.
I have an old Nokia 6519i which had N contact numbers without a SIM.
After my 1661 screen was broken, I transfered the SIM to 6519i, and now I have M+N contact numbers.
How do I know the next contact number I add will be on SIM or on phone? How can I choose?

Thanks for that post, and advice. It's also better to keep all your contacts on your sim card, so if your phone dies, you won't lose your contacts.

I had the very same issue over the Thanksgiving weekend.. All of a sudden, I realized that no incoming beep or ring for a phone call was pretty important. I had a text alert - just no incoming call alert.

I called the SO customer service line and despite a CSR who was sympathetic, she could not solve this problem. She forwarded my concern to a supervisor and reassured me that my problem wouldn't be lost in the Speak Out Corporation and someone *would* get back to me the next business day.

I got in contact with this supervisor and she walked me through the steps while going through her checklist. She admitted that this was an ongoing Nokia firmware issue that they were very familiar with.

The solution was to go into the phone and 'restore factory' settings. Be careful about phone number lists (contacts) and that sort of thing; because you will lose all your settings once you do this. Once the phone powered up it was operating as per usual. I have had no issues since.

My 1661 fell out of a pocket to concrete ground, the screen broke under the protective film came with the new phone.
If I know the exact key sequence without using the screen, I could still use it to place or recieve calls. But otherwise, it's useless, (Unless someone has some suggestion?)
I'm waiting for Santa Sale and perhaps get a different model.

To answer your question about the phone, I had the exact same problem, with my 1661. I believe it's a bad software issue. I'm not sure how many people are affected, but I've heard plenty of stories, of the same issues. My phone was crashing/restarting as well. You might be better off getting another phone.

I've had the Nokia 1661 for nearly a year with the SpeakOut service and something's happened that has rendered it nearly useless. It stopped ringing out of the blue. When I go in to alter the ringtone settings (to change ring volume, set vibrate, etc.) it crashes — the phone just shuts right off. To get back in, it forces me to enter a security code (I thankfully figured this one out and was able to re-enter the phone), but I can't touch the settings. So the phone won't ring at all, and the text messaging function has gone loopy and won't type any characters properly. It's almost as if it has a virus or something. I've tried taking out the battery and replacing it, but all that does is force me into another security code window.
Is there any way to fix this phone, or is it dead? I need to know soon, as my minutes are close to expiring and I'm not sure I want to throw any more money at this.
Thanks.
