You are able to download with the free version maps from all over the world. Once on the SD, these maps can be accessed without data, or WiFi and it's working really well. The only trick is to set your destination while WiFi is available, otherwise will take lot longer to figure out the desired destination.

I also get as many as 4 updates FREE per year to keep my maps up to date!

MapFactor Navigator (free) uses offline maps that are preloaded - doesn't need/use a data connection while driving. The app's route logic is weird at times, but no more so than Google Maps directions.
