The Bold 9650 probably will work. I say probably because it is a CDMA phone, which is incompatible with Speakout. However, it is also a GSM phone, which is compatible with Speakout. The question is if you can get the GSM part working. Some CDMA carriers have the option to disable the GSM component through software, and even if the phone is unlocked, the software is still there.

If you have a friend with a working Fido, Rogers or Speakout SIM card, see if you can use the phone on those cards, and if they work, it should also work with your new Speakout SIM card.

Actually, I just edited my post as it is a Bold 9650 that I can have. So I suppose it is suitable.

An unlocked Blackberry Bold 9000 will work just fine with Speakout. $35 ($10 SIM card and $25 airtime) will get you 1 year of service, and eat up $15 ($1.25*12) of your balance in 911 fees. That leaves you with a $10 balance, or 40 local minutes for the year.

Hello to all,

Firstly, I have never had a cell phone so I am at a total loss when it comes to all the different phones and rate plans. Actually, I am on information overload at the moment.

I am only in the market for a phone that I can toss in the glove box for emergency use and I find that the 7-11 rates might be just what I'm looking. I would venture a guess that the 911 monthly charge would eat through the prepaid amount before I used more than a few minutes of talk time. But I can live with that for the convenience.

Anyway, I've been looking at a hand-me-down unlocked Blackberry Bold 9650 that I can acquire for a very fair $20. Will this phone work with 7-11?

Many thanks for any input.
