The 3G will work for basic phone features, but you won't get data to work.

Downside
- Mail app doesn't work over data (I use webmail through Safari)
- Data can be slow sometimes (especially in the downtown core of Toronto)

Upside
-Extremely affordable
-No contracts
-Anonymity (even Speakout has no idea who you are)
-365 day expiry on phone cards
