It doesn't. Well, not really.

The iPhone, and other Smartphones that have WiFi can access the internet with Wifi for free, whether they are using Speakout or Rogers or whatever.

If you are using the iPhone on Rogers or Fido you can also access the internet using their cellular data service (ie 3G, GPRS, Edge, etc.), in case you are not in an area which you can receive a WiFi signal. You'll always be paying for this service, either through a monthly fee (for a certain amount of data) or you'll be billed later on your monthly bill for the amount of data you used. That's the same with any smartphone. Generally browsing the internet can get pretty expensive, but it's not as expensive as it was a few years ago.

If you are using the iPhone on Speakout, you'll be able to use WiFi the same as before (since it has nothing to do with the cellular network). But you will not be able to access the internet through the cellular network since Speakout doesn't offer that service. To the best of my knowledge, no cell company in Canada offers data to prepaid customers.

i guess long term reliability becomes more of an issue tho, since the 2g would be that much older.

That should be all there is to it. Basically, you'll have an iPod touch with basic calling and texting capabilities. You're just missing the 3G Internet stuff and the related goodies, like browsing maps while you're on the bus. Not too shabby if you ask me. It's not good to be connected all the time!
