Hi,

The new iOS Google maps app is out now. So far, it seems to work flawlessly as it was before with Speak Out or Petro-Canada on 3G.

Ok, just checked, and the maps app *does* work in iOS on SpeakOut. It just takes a minute or two to load the map data. I bet it tries whatever port it usually runs on, and it times out and falls back to port 80.

Weird about the maps data. I live in a small city, and the iOS 6 maps and satellite images are better for my area than the Google ones. But I don't need a map to get around here, I need one in New York or San Francisco. And apparently the iOS 6 maps suck in those places.

So for me, for now, it's Google Maps in Safari. Sucks, but I can't complain at SpeakOut prices

I've tried using Google Maps through Safari, but at most zoom levels the text is close to unreadable. Has anyone else had this issue? Are there any good alternatives in the app store?

Little correction, I tried iOS6 maps in Toronto downtown today and to my surprise it did work, it just took a bit of time before all data was loaded (satellite and street maps). I didn't try navigation though but from what I hear wouldn't dare anyway until Apple has sorted the major bugs.

I have a 4s with ios6 and Speakout. I can get apple maps to work on 3G if I am getting it to navigate from source to destination. The voice navigation (turn left on this road, go for another 500 metres, etc). The only issue I seem to have is the maps are not always displayed. So I may start of with the maps and half way through to my destination, the roads may disappear. However, the voice navigation to direct me to my destination has been working flawlessly so far. It also knows to use alternate routes if I deviate from my original route.

I have another issue with ios 6 /Speakout but will start another tread

I wouldn't let myself being discouraged of upgrading to iOS6 just because maps don't work on SO!
The first thing I did was linking Google Maps to my home screen and that works fine. Rumor has it that Google is working on an app and if Apple doesn't find a rediculous reason not to approve it, we are hopefully fine again.
Anyways, the SO limitations suck but on the other hand imho no other provider offers a remotely good value for money!

IMO, apple has already passed their peak from a mobile phone technology perspective.

I have saved my SHSH on all the iDevice and would stick with 5.1.1 for a long long time.

That downgrade will only work for a short time until Apple closes the 5.1.1 signing of SHSH blobs. After that point, you would have to back up your SHSH blobs or create a custom IPSW of your current 5.1.1 with iFaith.

That's bad. Even before I saw this thread, I downgraded back to iOS 5.1.1 because the new maps were so bad. I did not test if they work on 3G though. But if they don't (I guess new maps use non-http ports that are filtered by Rogers), then iOS 6 is to a large extent useless on Speakout. Here is the downgrade guide that worked for me. Having a backup in iTunes helps. The guide says to also upgrade iTunes to 10.6.3, but I already had 10.7 and it worked too,
http://techglobex.blogspot.ca/.....re-to.html

One note. After downgrade I lost 3G. I re-entered APN settings (through iPhone Config Util), toggled 3G on/off, took the SIM out and put it back in. Nothing helped. Called support, they said to hard reset the phone (hold both power and home buttons down for 10secs until the screen goes black) and they were going to send a signal to the phone or something. That did not seem to help. So 5-10 minutes after hanging up on support and finding that reset did not help, I took the SIM out again and put in an old non-working SIM and then put my SIM back and 3G started working. Maybe it was another SIM, but maybe it took support few minutes to do whatever they were going to do.
