Not clear how anyone is getting imessage to work over wifi since speakout doesn't support shortcodes. How are you activating imessage or facetime on speakout? It seems crazy that we can't use these features over wifi as a 4g touch without any phone works perfectly. The iPhone is less capable than an iPod touch in that regard. iMessage is really handy, because it is integrated with SMS in a seamless way.

So I will ask a simple question, does anyone on speakout with an iPhone have the ability to use facetime or iMessage on wifi? If so, how?

I am playing around with imessage too. As soon as I turn my Wi-Fi off, the messages will not send. I think I am agreeing with the blocked port thing. However, GTalk works on 3G nowadays with Speakout, so maybe iMessage will start working one day as well.

According to the iOS5 details on the Apple web site it states that "You can send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch to anyone with on of thoes devices....". It also states that iMessage is buit right into the message app.

I would think that it is using a port that Rogers blocks for Speakout and therefore another app that is unusable under the Speakout unlimited data plan.

Exact thing I was worried about. Are you saying that you can no longer send a text to another iPhone while using 3G data? If it fails, does it automatically send the text via SMS or dos it just fail?

I am wondering if the so called iMessage is just another IM which use non-http port, like gtalk(when it decide to not sending via SMS but data). If you can control your router, you may be able to see(via log) where it wants to go to.

I don't need another apple specific thing, no facetime, no imessage thank you.

I've just updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5.0 and was testing out the new messaging system. It seems that iMessages work while on Wifi, but seem to fail when the phone is connected to 2G or 3G. I'm confident there will be a tweak or something released for jailbroken iphones to disable this feature, but am worried that it will not affect other iphone users that will iMessage me.

If anyone sees an tweak or setting (jailbroken or not) that will disable the iMessage feature while on 3G or 2G please share that link.

Any thoughts?
