Speakout has from it's inception, been selling awful phones. It never really hurt their reputation that much, because the phone may have been awful, but they were cheap. These phones, for the most part, did their job.

The Huawei Ascend Y215 is getting panned because it is a rather expensive phone for what you get. You can get the Huawei Ascend Y300 using a Jelly Bean OS for $60 at future shop/Best Buy/Walmart etc... and it is a much better phone than the Y215. I gave the Huawei Ascend Y215 a drubbing mainly because I had my hand on a Bell version, which only had Gingerbread OS 2.3.3, and the experience was truly awful. At least the Speakout version uses ICS 4.0.4 But again, the price is too high for what you get.

well... before i bought the huawei phone, i think it is a lousy product as there are too many people saying this. However, after I purchased it (like a gambling), I can tell you that it is a really good phone.
it is a nice pretty fast phone. It also has GPS, I installed 20+ new apps to it and it can send half the files to memory card and save up more space for other apps. Good!

I am not a frequent user who need to use high end apple and samsung.

If you are just a regular user of phone and internet and apps, it should be enough for you.

7-11 speakout is not stupid. do you think it will use a "garbage" phone to destroy its brand name?

NO!

I'm using the Alcatel 356,an to be honest, it is "basic." But I have found it to be fine for my needs. It has good call quality (clarity and volume) and texting is quite easy for my larger than average fingers. I can easily recommend it as a simple "emergency" phone.

I'm still waiting to buy a Speakout cellphone for only emergency purposes. Is the Huawei Ascend Y215 worth the $149 price or should I settle for the Alcatel 356 for $49?

I wouldn't recommend the Huwaei Ascend. The Alcatel 356 has the advantage of being dirt cheap, and since it's a feature phone, the battery life will be better, which for an emergency only phone, may be more important. If you're going to leave the phone in the car, for example, go with the Alcatel.

Personally, I picked up a Rogers Lumia 520 back in August (it was on sale for $99, sadly, it's $149). For the same price as the Ascend, it's a solid phone, and has a terrific offline (ie. no data connection required) GPS, which makes it a great phone to keep in the car for emergencies.
