I set up Gmail via Exchange, and I have no problem receiving emails. However, sending doesn't work. Appreciate if anyone can help.
I also downloaded the App from Google and it is with the same problem.

if it is exchange, it use one single protocol http(s) for both send/receive so should not have anything to do with UMB.

I have the exact same issue. iPhone 3GS, IOS 5. Emails push into my phone but my email app will not connect with Gmail. I find that you can still send them once in an while even when it is not connecting, though it takes a few minutes. My Wife has the identical phone with identical settings and it works for some reason. I wiped my phone and restored from a 2 month old iCloud backup and then it worked properly for two days and then stopped again.

Even though email shows that it's not connecting, try sending an email anyway. It might surprise you by sending anyway.
