I've heard in iphone forums that those "unlock codes" are a scam. There is no simple way to unlock an iPhone, and any way usually breaks something like the GPS feature. I don't know much about other phones, though.

For occasional use, Speakout has a great feature others don't have: a payment of $25 keeps your phone alive for a whole year. Most companies require a minimum $10 a month payment.

Why not use one of the Speakout phones? Other phones may look like a bargain but that is because they are locked to a phone company that will charge you way more to use it. Web browsing on a phone is not all that great - the screen is too small. I had a Nokia C3 briefly and sent it back for that reason. Now have an iPhone - much better - but still very awkward for many sites. Check it out on someone else's phone before you buy.

Yes – $10 a month no matter how much browsing you do. And if, for example, you sign up Feb 25th and decide to cancel browsing on March 26th, you would be charged $10 on Feb 25th + $10 on March 25th even though you are only 1 day into your 2nd month. You are charged $10 each month on the 'anniversary' date you signed up for browsing.
Texting is charged per text (at cost listed on their site or in FAQ) unless you sign up for a value plan.

Yeah that's what I was wondering. So I can't just do occasional browsing, it's either a full $10 or nothing? Same with texting? Or is texting taken out of the voucher at 10 cents per outgoing text?

Thanks!

Yes, Speakout would work for your needs.

The phone you buy has to be unlocked or compatible to the Rogers network- the one you link to would be locked to Telus so it would have to be unlocked after you bought it.

Texts/calls/Browsing would be covered by the voucher. Have you read the FAQ? https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/

Hi!

I'm buying my first ever cell phone, and I'm overwhelmed with all the phone/plan options.

I plan to use my cell phone for only occasional use – emergency calls, playing games on the bus, occasional/rare calls and some texting. Maybe some net browsing, but not if it'll cost a lot extra. Basically I'm looking for a really cheap option. Preferably not a monthly plan, but one where I can carry over my leftovers forever from whatever "timecard" I buy.

Is Speak Out right for me?

If yes/maybe… I have a couple more questions.

Will this phone work with SO? Link

I haven't bought it yet. So if it doesn't work with SO, or you have a better suggestion, let me know please!

And my second question is, I'm assuming right now I'd be buying one of the SO vouchers (not a monthly plan). Do those voucher airtime minutes only cover calling? Meaning my occasional texting/browsing would cost extra?

Thanks – any replies would be much appreciated!
