My guess is that Rogers started disabling 3G from Speakout network since they introduced unlimited browsing. Remember, Speakout was never 3G network.

Correct, on my train ride home, prior to 3G, I got 2G data for pretty much the entire trip excepting when we go through a golf course and a marsh area. I always had signal bars for the entire trip however. Now, as soon as we approach Danforth station I lose all signal and it doesn't return until we near Pickering.

I called customer service and she seemed fairly uninterested. Told me a tech guy would call me but I'm not holding my breath.

Although this is not quite related to EDGE, my sisters are both on Speakout as well and they said their phones are taking a long time to connect to service as well (a good couple of minutes from power up). They both have the same Nokia music phone from 7-11. Prior to this, they were connecting fine. Now they are not receiving calls sometimes or have no bars when they usually did.
Could this be why many of us are only getting EDGE speeds now? Something up with the cell towers?

Note: I live in Vancouver. 30 min bus ride from the downtown core.

I'm getting 3G speed in downtown Toronto and at home in Ajax. On the train ride home it drops to Edge as soon as we leave Union Station until we hit Pickering. This sucks because data is almost unusable for most of that trip. Hopefully this will be a temporary thing.

I have also only been getting Edge since Nov 2nd, and I live in Vancouver. Got 3G and even HDSPA+ up until Nov 2nd.

To the doubters on this thread, clearly something has changed with the network as of Nov 2nd.

It's not even just a data issue, the phone will no longer connect to those towers anymore period, even for voice. (To clarify, this means if I try to force connecting to 3G only, the phone will not see towers anymore, so even 3G voice is completely offline, nevermind data – 2G voice / old towers still works fine).

It seems Rogers has forced us all on to their old network/towers only now.

Edit: Also, to clarify, I am on Petro Canada, not Speakout, but they use the same network.

Thank you! I'm not even sure what's happened. It takes forever for my phone to connect JUST to Speakout after I restart or turn off/on. I get "no service" for a couple of minutes. I really hope this is not a permanent thing. I thought the 3G speed was standard because that's what I started with when I added on the unlimited browsing feature.

Luckily, I never rely on the unsupported 3G anyway. My Bell iPad plan is good enough for my data need and I always treat the SO as a fallback plan if I need that(not even has a data plan right now).

It does have the advantage of longer battery life. No wonder I am seeing better battery laterly.
