the C3 email client is not using pop3. It is using Nokia's service as an aggregator(i.e. same as google accessing your email account of pop3). IOW, it is using plain port 80/443 to communicate with Nokia's server which check for email from time to time.

You cannot do pop3 or smtp though Speakout data. Everything has to be web based, either through HTTP or HTTPs at port 80. All this goes through a HTTP proxy.

A more practical solution would be to use the pop3 or smtp settings through gmail, and then use gmail for your E71.

Nokia has a free email service for the E71 that might be of use to you. I believe you can get it at the ovi store.

I'm surprised it wont work through pop3 as my c3 - although very slow - did.

C3 SUPPORT gmail. I am using it everyday. It supports all three major email(gmail/live/yahoo) and IM(again gtalk/yahoo/live). The only thing I don't like is the one I have is SO branded, i.e. cannot be unlocked. But no complain otherwise as I am effectively having it for 15 bucks(2 month free UMB + 25 credit bonus net to 45 bucks) as I bought it when it was @ 59.

The IM part though needs flashing of non-Canadian region firmware in order to unhide it.

I picked up a used Nokia E71 to replace a C3. I switched from the C3 as email was very slow and it didn't support gmail well. I have the data plan and am setting up the email accounts on the E71 but cannot get my pop3 accounts to work. Oddly enough the GMail app works perfect. I have used the wizard and then gone in and ensured all the settings were as they show on my home computer. Nothing through the messaging works (not even when I tried to set up the gmail that is working through an app). Does not connect.

Any suggestions are appreciated as I've run out of things to try.
My connection settings are...

Security port - off
