Phew, that was close. Since I only had a small sum left, I was about to switch to Mobilicity/Wind. Their $25 plan is too irresistible not to jump on right now. It is about $10 more per month than what I am currently using with Speakout. However, I will truly be getting DATA instead of just browsing.

I am glad this issue has been resolve so that I did not have to switch and spend more. Now the 25% bonus is here, it is double treat.

Thanks Speakout

Just got a call back from their customer service on this issue. As this is stated numerous times..Speakout has only a 2G service agreement with Rogers and thats all they can support right now. 3G was a nice bonus while it lasted! Those who still have it are lucky, i suspect a slow switchover to 2G for the remaining areas over time. Having been spoiled on 3G now its really tough to go back to 2G.

There are also a lot more choices out there now with the prepaid data plans. (PC, Fido etc.).

This forum has been a great resource over the years. Thanks again to the moderators and the users for the quick answers and trouble shooting tips!

Looks like its time for me to check out. Over and out.

I just got an update from my source at SpeakOut regarding this specific post. Here's their reply:

"In regards to the posting by Highroller on November 8, 2011 concerning SpeakOut and 3G service, the information relayed by the customer care agent is inaccurate. SpeakOut does have access to 3G service. There have been intermittent downages across the network, that and rollout issues that are affecting the service. However, since we do not currently promote or charge for the 3G service - it's availability has been and is a current bonus."

So, that's straight from SpeakOut. On another note, as you can see, SpeakOut DOES come to this site, and reads what's going on, so abide by the rules, and we will all get along fine.

Have a question.

I will be purchasing a BlackBerry Bold 9780 from the Rogers store unlocked and a 7-11 Sim card.

I won't need a data plan as I have wifi and that is plenty for me. Will the downgrade to 2G have any affect on voice or does this ONLY affect web browsing???

Please reply soon as I hope to purchase this phone very soon!

Funny, I was heading out of town (Toronto) over the weekend. I was able to connect 3G once I left Toronto and maintain 3G all the way toward Brantford.
I think Rogers is attacking the big market first. It makes sense since they have a higher density of antennae so eliminating 3G reception is still provides decent signal with the original GSM antennae.
However, with the other regions outside the big city centre, density of antennae is not as good so they may just allow connecting to the 3G network.

Disappointed for sure that 3G is gone. Right now the only place I can see connected to 3G is along and north of the 401.

Though Speakout did not literally state only 2G network, their available phones which are suppose to be used with their service only support GSM 2G.

It was the best data plan around. But it looks like I will be cancelling the browsing data. I will still keep the voice account until at least I can find another alternative to an affordable data browsing plan.
