Unfortunately the answer is no. Your Fido sim card works with Fido service, and since Fido wants to get paid for the service they provide you, you have to buy airtime from Fido.

Same thing with any other company. It's like paying Telus for my Rogers service - doesn't work that way.

However, if you want to switch your service over to Speakout it's fairly easy to do.

Just buy a Speakout phone and sim from 7-11, and then call Speakout customer service to transfer your number from Fido to Speakout (called 'porting out').

You will, however, have to buy Speakout airtime cards in the future (and not Fido cards), and you will probably not be able to use your Fido handset with the Speakout card unless you get it unlocked. Or you can just sell your Fido handset and use the Speakout phone you just bought.

Can I just buy minutes and use my phone with my EUROPEAN sim card?

You can, but as Peter says, the roaming fees will kill you. Rogers has a monopoly on GSM in Canada. All overseas SIMs have to use Rogers' network and they get hosed by Ted for doing it. Expect to pay $2 or $3 per minute.

Also depending on the card, you may not be able to recharge the SIM from over here.

You might be able to use the European SIM card here, but then you would be roaming (can be quite expensive, up to several dollars a minute) and you would have to top up with that European service provider (rather inconvenient). Remember, the SIM is always tied to the service provider; an unlocked phone is not.
