You picked open a really old thread. Unlimited browsing only arrived on SO in November 2009. Any posts from before that time were quite accurate in saying that browsing was only possible on wifi. There are a few of posts on this thread since that time that agree with your results.

At the time I wrote my previous post, no one had reported being able to use Google Maps on the ULB plan. I think some have since that time. I don't have ULB so I have no idea nor interest in searching to see if you can. I was able to install and use the stand alone Blackberry Maps on a BBerry 8800 I have long since sold without needing any browser connection once the maps were installed on the phone from my computer.

The maps for BBerry Maps are stored on your device. You will have to install them via the Desktop Manager from a computer if they aren't preinstalled on your device.
It took several tries to get my 8800 to recognize that it had BlackBerry Maps installed. The program was installed but not accessible. I tried forcing the service books to refresh with no luck. In the end I put a SIM card in from a Rogers phone with a Data Plan, and I'm assuming that the phone downloaded new service books — because several new icons showed up including BBerry Maps. When I put my SO SIM back, the BBerry maps icon was there and it is working fine.
Google maps needs a Data Plan and more than just the WAP browser so the only way they might work on a BBerry on SO is via wifi — which limits the usefulness of a GPS.

Update -- search the other threads in this forum -- it appears others have actually gotten Google Maps working using the ULB plan from SO.

The Rogers network automatically configured my BB 8100's Service Book to work with the WAP browser and goam.com portal. I can't remember, but I might have had to wipe the old service book entries.

Note that you will not be able to use most BB apps that communicate through the 'Net.

This is incorrect. I have a BlackBerry 8100 on SpeakOut:

- WAP browsing works using the Blackberry browser.
- Push email works using the Funambol.com open source email app.
- The Weather Network Blackberry app works.
- Laptop tethering works (EDGE)

I couldn't get Opera Mini (4.2 or 5) to run.

You can also use on that is locked to Rogers. So if you can find an old phone that was previously used on Rogers, it will work just fine with a Speakout SIM as well.

For example, I've used a Rogers-locked iPhone 3G with my Speakout SIM, no problem.

I found a BLACKBERRY 7290 GSM 32MB Unlocked for sale. It is wi-fi capable, I believe.

EDIT: Actually, it seems I should shell out for a Blackberry Curve 8900 or Nokia E61 if I want wi-fi browsing capabilities. But you can only buy those unlocked from E-Bay.
