Unless the 5 is different in this regard than its predecessors (which I very much doubt, as it's more of an iOS and carrier thing) then you don't need an activated SIM to activate the iPhone ... just a SIM that's accepted by the carrier's network (Rogers re: Speakout).

I run all apple products at home and am upgrading to an iPhone from an iPod Touch. I just wasnt sure if I could use the SO SIM to activate. Thanks for clarifying it for me.

Until I make a decision about what cell plan I want, I will use SO for the time being. If my usage doesn't increase I'll just keep it. Thanks for the help. I didn't really want to get a cell plan until XMAS when some good plan deals come up but I'm forced to jump in sooner. This seems like the best initial strategy. 25 bucks a year to be able to use my iPhone is worth it.

If you have an iPhone 5 you need a Nano SIM card that is smaller than a standard SIM and also smaller than a Micro SIM (the "old" SIM size for iPhone 4, 4S, HTC One X etc).

You can get a Nano SIM for the major Canadian Carriers or free from any Apple Store by presenting you invoice. You then have to activate the card on the internet and choose a plan.

However, if you don't want a plan etc. you can also cut down a SpeakOut SIM to size (no sanding down necessary btw, plenty of users have reported that taking 0.0xmm off the SIM doesn't make a difference!) and you find plenty of templates to do so if you google for it (Nano SIM cut template etc).

You then insert your activated SpeakOut SIM while on wifi and open unlockit.co.nz as you need to change the socalled APN settings in order to go online with your phone using 3G.

I did all that and it works fine.

If an iPhone 5 is for you of not is something only you can decide. I like mine!

Good luck with your purchase. I am sure there are plenty of Apple apologist fan-boys that think that this is a good thing.

If you want to return to sanity, I would return the phone, and get a good phone that works, even an older model iphone or even Android phone. But hey.

I recently purchased an unlocked iPhone 5 from Apple.ca. When I got it I realized that I need a sim card to actually use any features on the phone.

Is it possible to get the Speakout SIM, cut it down to nano-size, and use that to activate the phone? Or do I have to get a different SIM card first or do something else first?

Please help me out so I can actually use this phone.
I honestly thought I'd be able to use the other features of this phone without making a call until I decided on what plan I was going to get. Looks like I need to make up my mind faster and that's why Speakout seems to be the cheapest/best option currently.

Can I use the Speakout SIM to activate? Anything else I need to do than cut it and put it in?
