PS: does petrocan ones have 1 year expiry as well? Currently, I only know of Rogers and 7-11 with 1 year expiry but you have to spend $100 reload to get that.

My guess is that they're not making much on the sale of their phones. According to engadget.com, Nokia sells the 1208 for approx. $50US. Then you add in the cost of the SIM card, shipping to the stores, etc etc, I doubt they're making much profit (if any) on a handset sale.

(And of course SO makes a lot less money when you take advantage of the 'Buy $100 airtime, get a free phone' promo)

Of course, they make up for it when you buy additional airtime. Just like Gillete giving away razors cause they make money on the blades, or HP selling inkjet printers for cheap cause they make $$$ on inkjet cartridges.

Cellphone companies can sell their phones for a loss, if the phones are locked to their company. Tracfone, T-Mobile, SO USA all sell locked phones, so they can afford to sell their phones at a loss.

Another way to compare is with Fido. Fido used to sell the Nokia 5200 (locked to Fido) for $200 if you went prepaid while SO was selling an unlocked version for $150. Fido (the new and improved low-end Fido) now sells the Nokia 2760 (locked to Fido) for $75 under the prepaid plan, and SO sells an unlocked version for not that much more ($90).

7-11 US sells their phone for $20 each including $5 of airtime, $40US is the most expensive phone in the US. Why is it so expensive in Canada.

As I understand it all phones sold by SO US are locked. All but one phone sold by SO Canada are unlocked. That oartly explains the difference but there are others. For example in the US you can buy PAYG airtime from T-Mobile for as little as 10¢/min with no premium for "long distance" within the US. There is no such competitor in Canada so SO can get away with charging more.

That could be said about many things bought in the USA. Some things are cheaper, and some things are not.

As for phones, there are usually many that are sold on this site, and well priced. Take a look in the same forum you posted in (Phone Exchange), and you will see phones and sim cards for sale.

As far as I know, the cheapest phone Speak Out sells is the Nokia 1208. I have one myself and it is an excellent phone.

I don't know if that store has all the models, seems strange that they only have one model. Can someone tell me which is the cheapest model 7-11 currently offers and how much it is. Once I have that info, I can start looking around the city for it.
