Al,

In most cases I would agree with you and go for the $100 airtime/free phone deal instead of buying just a SIM, since if you want to buy a SIM, you're going to want to use the phone, and therefore will need some airtime.

As well, don't forget that most of the time Speakout doesn't have this promotion going on, so buying a SIM on it's own works out to be the best (most of the time anyways).

Realize too, that if you need a $100 top-up for your existing SO phone you can (1) buy just a $100 top-up or (2) go for the "free" phone promotion. I don't know why anyone would pick door #1 when for the same price they can get a free phone and SIM that they can sell here or on eBay, etc. and reduce the actual cost of their $100 top-up, possibly by half. That's probably the main reason why you see people selling their extra phones and/or SIMs here.

Some people have lots of GSM unlocked phones, and are looking just to add a sim. With the current deal, you have to buy the top-up voucher for $100, and then you get the phone for free.

For myself, I already have a few phones laying around.

Some people would rather spend just the $30, then spending over $100 (including tax) for another phone they don't need.

When I got my dad to join Speak Out, I did just that. I bought a sim card from this site, and now he's good to go.

OK, I was able to add 11+7 correctly (so what I'm NOT missing is a brain) and now I get the chance to ask this question 🙂

I see lots of folks here offering SIMs with $5 credit for $30. Surely I can just get a SIM plus a whole phone for nothing with the current deal? Why should I pay $30 for $5 airtime, and then have to supply my own phone?

Or am I missing something? Sorry, I'm just confused!
