I assume that Speakout/PetroCan handsets are locked, and the Rogers handset is locked for sure. They can both work with your T-Mobile SIM, but you'll have to get either one unlocked.

If you can get the phone for half price while buying $100 in airtime, that may be the way to go even if you will be shelling out more money at one time. First off, you're going to have to buy airtime sometime. Secondly, the cost of the handset is cheaper. And third, you'll have an extra Speakout SIM that you can sell for probably $25.

I already have a SO SIM so in order to get the 5130 phone even with the half-price deal, I'd have to shell out approx $190 ($100voucher + $70 handset + taxes). My way of thinking, if the SO 5130 is indeed locked, there's no advantage of it over the Rogers handset so I may as well just pay $99 & sell the Rogers SIM. The deciding factor (for me) is whether the T-Mobile US SIM will work in the Rogers handset.

Big Ang said:</p

Speakout is guilty of the same thing, they charge $140 for the Nokia 5130 while Rogers charges $100. If you can find someone to buy the Rogers SIM card off you, you can buy the phone from Rogers, sell the SIM, but a Speakout SIM and you're all set.

Would a T-Mobile SIM also work in this scenario? I would consider buying the 5130 from Rogers in this case & use my SO SIM in it for Canada & buy a T-Mobile SIM for USA.

I was comparing this phone to what Rogers is offering.

Rogers is offering this same phone for only $90 (PetroCan Mobility charges $110) AND includes a Bluetooth headset! What's up with the expensive markup by PetroCan Mobility?

PetroCan is not like Speakout which offers large discounts every other month, so what's up with the high costs? And it's not like the phones are unlocked anymore - most, if not all, are locked to Speakout/PetroCan/Rogers.

Just checked the PetroCanada Mobility site and it seems PetroCan is now selling the Nokia 2780 slider.

My brother has been using that phone with Rogers for about 6 months now, and it is a really nice phone - feels better in your palm than almost any other phone I've ever used.

It's not a high-end phone (although it feels like it), the features are pretty much identical to the Nokia 2760 flip and PetroCanada's Nokia 2730 candybar phone. FM radio, basic low-res camera, and Bluetooth.

The PetroCanada website claims it has expandable memory, but there is no mention of that on the Nokia website. Anyone bought one of these from PetroCan yet?
