koodo has a fairly reasonable plans for "light" cellphone users.

To answer your questions:

PetroCan SIM with SO airtime - No.

Sticking your GSM sim card into an unlocked GSM phone - like every single other GSM service on the planet the answer is yes. Just make sure that the phone works in N.America (ie uses 800 and/or 1900 MHz GSM).

the pricing is ok and the service is good but they dont even put in fine print that if your late with yoyr payment they cut off your outgoing calls, they try to distract you telling you that you have a $200 credit limit before the stop your service which is a lie, other than that its a very good deal, koodo is a telus company, and if you cant get on to a contract with telus it is the next best thing, just make sure you question everything or you could wake up with no service

Fred, do you mean that you can use the SIM from Petro Canada in SO network (so buying SO vouchers)?
Aka go buy cheapest Petro Canada Phone, take SIM, put it into a unlocked GMS phone OR Rogers phone and activate it with SO?

I've checked Koodo, Virgin & Fido and their biggest drawbacks is the time expires after only 30 to 60 days. Meaning it will cost you the minimum (around $10-20) once per month = $120 per year just to keep your account active. If you are a light user and only use it once in a while, SpeakOut is defenitely the way to go as the time is valid for 180 to 365* days depending if you buy at Petro or 7-eleven and also on the denomination.

*Note: Valid for 160 days for $20 or $50 and 365 days for $100 at PC. I beleive it is 365 for any denomination at 7-11.

What I recommend is buy the cheapest phone at 7-11 or PC (or pay it with your petro points) and go out and buy a better unlocked phone -if you went with either of the other carriers most of you would spend ~$150 on a descent phone anyway.

Koodo Mobile doesn't charge a $6.95 system access fee, but they do charge $5/month for voice mail.

You'll pay $30 per month for basic service with voice mail and 100 minutes (free after 7pm and weekends). That works out to 30 cents a minute at daytime rates.

If you're a light mobile user who talks less than 100 minutes a month it makes sense to go with SpeakOut or Petro Canada and save.

Koodo mobile is owned by Telus. They are using CDMA. They create this brand to compete for the youth market much like Roger is with Fido and Bell is with Solo.
