Good point about the 10% discount when you use Koodo's Automatic Top-up feature. I still think data costs way too much!

I like what charge.co offers in the US -- $3 per month base fee and 1GB for $13 top-up and no expiry date. Hopefully, some Canadian providers will introduce something like this in the future.

I got myself a nice dual-sim phone and am presently using Speakout for voice and Fido's $15 tablet data plan. Very happy so far.

Otherwise, I probably would have gone with the Koodoo Prepaid. (Realize too that with a automatic payment setup, the price drops to $13.50/month.) The Koodoo phone calls will only cost you $.05 a minute too. So if you talk on your phone a bit more, then this might be the best option. And the data is a third of the Speakout rate.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what is the best data plan at the moment for light users at the moment.

Fido's 2GB (sometimes 3GB) per month for $15 is pretty good, but I do not use 2GB a month.

Telus has a promotion for 1GB per month for $10. Not bad. Edit - appears this only applies to postpaid customers.

Speakout's 100MB per month for $10 is too little and doesn't rollover. So that's out of the question.

For those that need to text:

Koodo's prepaid minimum of $15 per month allows for unlimited texting, but no data. Using their 1GB for $30 data top-up, let's say you use 100MB / month, this would equal $3. So this roughly works out to $18.00 per month, which includes unlimited texting within Canada.

Edit - If you use Koodo's Automatic top-up, you save 10%. So the above works out to $16.50 per month.

Public Mobile's prepaid minimum of $25 per 90 days has no talk, no text and no data. Using their 200MB for $10 data top-up, let's say you use 100MB / month, this would equal $5. Or if you use their 1GB for $30 data top-up and you use 100MB / month, this would equal $3. The good thing is unused data rolls over to the next pay period. The minimum would work out to $11.33 per month or if you use the smaller top-up that would be $13.33. The numbers would be smaller if you don't even use 100MB a month.

Edit - If you use Public Mobile's AutoPay, you save $2 per month. So the rates work out to be $9.33 per month and $11.33 per month depending on your top-up and if you use 100MB per month.

Does anyone have any other options?
