Your home phone needs to have call forwarding capability. This is usually an extra charge service. Check with your home phone service provider to see what is provided and what the cost is.

I have Shaw Digital Phone Lite at home - and it's included in the base rate.

I use Voicemail a lot and retrieve my messages from a landline.
Never paid for anything yet.

There is no service fee for your voice mail. Airtime charges may apply for retrievals from your Speakout phone.

There is no charge from SO if you access voicemail from a non-SO phone. I set up my voicemail and usually pickup messages from a landline. I've never been charged for any of this by SO. (Nor, as stated, for the time other people use in leaving me messages on SO.)

What i did was get rid of voice mail. Call customer service to turn it off.
Because you get charged by the minute not only while people are leaving messages, but also when you retrieve them from the phone.

From the FAQ:

9. What are the voicemail charges?

Leaving messages and retrieving messages are free, unless you are checking them from your cell
phone. In that case, regular airtime charges apply.

From the December 2007 downloaded flyer:

- - There is no service fee for your voice mail. Airtime charges may apply for retrievals from your Speakout phone.

... If you're being charged for people leaving messages, call CS and have it fixed.

Save both. I get a diplay on the front of my KRZR with the number and name, and a missed call message so I can see who called. I can call them back if I want or need too. saves me some $$$$$

So, my second month has passed.
Total airtime used: $ 5.20. Love it.
The " secret " is:

1. Be careful who you give your # to.
2. Question if your call is really necessary RIGHT NOW.
3. Possibly do a little more textmessaging.
4. Retrieve you Voicemail messages from a landline if convenient.

There, that's my story.

I've had the speakout service for about a month now I think, at the rate that we use it, the initial $25 time will probably last me all year. And I thought I was getting a great deal at $10/month.

This is my second cell. My first was Fido, lost $40 due to lateness by less then a day. Speakout last a year, so it would be easier to remember. At Fido was $10 a month not a lot, but speakout $3 dollars

I was paying average of 25 $ per month at Rogers, now down to 10 $ per month with SO.

I love it too! I average $5 per month using Speakout. Compared to I was charged $37 per month to Rogers, it's a saving of almost $400 per year.

yup, same here except I'm averaging $15 a month on SO where I was pay $40 to the big T before. Never looked back.

Well, it's been a month since switching ( from Telus, after 10 years ).
Average Telus monthly invoice @ $ 40.00
Average Speakout monthly cost @ 10.00.
Sure I watch how & when I use my airtime, but at this rate I can " squander " some more.
My favorite bonus feature is the lack of a monthly " System Access Fee ".
