I'm confused by what they mean by $25+top up for 365 days .. what is the $25 for and how much of a top up to get 365 days

The $25 is airtime credit. SO deducts anywhere from 5c/text to 45c/min for long distance calls from this credit. They also deduct 99c/month to pay for 911 service.

The 365 days is how long this credit can stay in your account before it expires. For example, if you don't make any calls your airtime credit will drop by 12x99=$11.88 during the 365 day period. If you don't buy more airtime then you'll lose the balance, $13.12, after 365 days. If you add more airtime before then, you'll keep the $13.12 plus new airtime for another 365 days.

Technically, they want you to buy one of their packages from a 7-Eleven retail store.

However, if you have a SO sim, you can use it in any unlocked GSM phone, that uses the North American bands (850/1900). SO sims are always up for sale on this site as well. Keep in mind that they (obviously) do not support phones that are not bought at a 7-Eleven store (SpeakOut branded).

If you have a Rogers sim in your phone, then you are using Rogers. If you have a SO sim in your phone, then you are using SO. Whatever sim is in your phone, that will be the provider you are accessing.

ANY top-up amount with SO lasts 365 days. If you but the $25 top-up, it will last 365 days.
