Anyone have any newstories on this?

I've seen stories in major papers recently that say both Yak/Globalive and Videotron are going to introduce their offerings this year or early next, despite the ongoing recession. However, it's not clear that they'll be competing with low margin PAYG like SO/PCM, but rather with the big-3 (Rogers, Bell, Telus.) The reason is that by offering, say $40/month packages, they can undercut the big-3's $50 or $60 ARPUs.

They`ll be done by end of summer. Everyone in Canada will be on the same standard by the fall.

I hope they introduce at least 3 new players on the GSM market because the way it is now it is absolutely ridiculous. Even every last Eastern European country offers affordable unlimited mobile internet for like 20 EUR a month but Canada is soooo far behind it's not even funny. If I had more time I would wrie a letter to my MP. This should be changed in the legislature, it's absurd with all the 3G phones and laptops you cannot surf freely outside your home. This is the 21st century, but Canada is still living in 20th century. Something has to be done here.

Unfortunately the way things stand right now, that's now going to happen, not even close. Play 6/49, you'll have a better chance of winning the jackpot than you have of Rogers giving away something that they don't have to.

Right now Rogers has the only GSM network in Canada. Yes, that sucks, everyone knows that. But right now Rogers doesn't even let its little brother Fido get all of it's good stuff that Rogers has, so they're not going to let some reseller like Speakout get something that Rogers doesn't even offer to their own clients.

Yes that sucks, blah blah, Rogers sucks, blah blah.

Fortunately we're going to see some increased GSM cellphone competition in a few years (only when the new companies own their own cell towers and network will they not have to answer to Rogers). Also Bell and Telus (yeah, they're just as bad as Rogers, everyone knows) are in the process of creating their own GSM network.

Once that happens, then MAYBE we'll see some better competition. Back when Fido was independent they came out with some great plans (including unlimited data, and unlimited voice minutes). Hopefully we'll see some better plans (post-paid and prepaid) come with more competition.

Speak Out was designed as a low cost, no frills wireless company. I think it should stay as is.

After Speakout introduces a data plan, wouldn't it be nice if they were the firs GSM carrier in Canada to provide unlimited access to the web and unlimited downloads? That would probably make a lot of folks consider switching from Rogers to SpeakOut, although it's the same carrier network.
That step would probably force Rogers to come out with an unlimited plan of their own, as Canada is the only industrialized country with NO GSM unlimited data plan....

The question is though, would Rogers even permit SO to introduce a plan like that as it would likely draw a big chunk of customers away from them?
