completely flaw logic.

If SO(or Rogers) cannot make a profit in UMB, it will be cancelled and whatever replace it is not going to be 'BETTER'. All other PAYGO data are metered and they are more expensive than SO.

SO's plan is not a full plan which is why it is cheap and there are people whose usage fit this pattern.

I am quite liberal and don't care how people use it but as someone has already mentioned, your usage is violating their terms and conditions.

Though I doubt they would do anything specifically about this as it is Roger's task and I doubt they would do it. The easiest way for Roger's would be to cut the whole deal and there goes the UMB.

As I said, I don't like it to be cancelled though it doesn't hurt me much(I am using Bell 250MB/15), just found your selfish act AND disgust as 'I am fighting for justice' a bit difficult to swallow.

That's where you are missing the big picture. If Speak Out cancels the plan because it isn't financially viable, we the consumer lose. Why? Because they will replace it with a plan that is financially viable. That means more money for Speak Out and where does that come from. Us, the consumer.

Second, I bet my ass that regardless of a demand for a $10 a month unlimited browsing, if it's not financially viable, NO ONE will offer it. Companies don't set up business to give away money.

Every carrier accommodates high data users. It's called overage fees. Ridiculously high yes, but it's there. They don't just shut you off.

I honestly couldn't use 1Gb of data a week on my iPhone. That's like uploading 1000 photos to Facebook or downloading a feature length movie in 1080P.

Do what you want, just don't try and justify your violation of the terms of use ploicy it to the rest of us.

You are failing to see the bigger picture. One single person using loads of data is not going to change anything but if more and more people left the major carriers to go to speakout the major carriers would be forced to adjust their plans and rates to lure customers back.

If speakout pulls the plan because its not viable financially, you can gaurentee they will adjust to a plan that is more viable. In either way we the consumer will win.

I might lose out on 10 dollar "browsing" plan but if that happens than something else will be offered to accomodate the growing market.

So that is why I will continue to use it excessively as well as encourage everyone I can to do the same.

If we all used very little data what incentive would speakout or any other carrier have to accomodate high data users on their networks and change their current offerings on rates.

You guys go ahead and limit yourself to your 10mb's a month (which by the way at that little data used a flex tablet plan would be cheaper or the same price without the limitations) or 50mbs or whatever you think is non excessive.

I will continue to milk it for all its worth. Either more people will flock to it and the demand in the market will shift so carriers will have to adjust the supply accordingly or it will remain the same and I will be one of those top 1% users that abuse the system while you conservative users limit yourself and not take advantage of it for fear of losing the status quo. If the majority of users here are keeping their limits really low it will offset my high usage and I do not need to worry about the plan being eliminated.

Your protest is quite flawed and here is why. You say you would rather lose what you have (a good deal) as a protest to the high rates. What will replace the current (good deal) is more "horrendous" rates. So why abuse something that is a good deal? You screw over the masses for your self righteous quest to teach a huge company a lesson. No one asked you to do this, in fact there have been several people quite outspoken against your moronic plan and the amount of data you use.

Your little story also didn't mention that this "Road Trip" was out of country. Out of country rates are charged by the host country not the country of origin. My AT&T plan in Michigan can roam in Ontario. Rogers is the one that charges AT&T for my data (I don't roam because it's too expensive $0.0015/Kb). Alternatively, I can use my Rogers wireless to roam in the US on the AT&T network. The rate that AT&T charges Rogers is $3/Mb (twice what rogers charges).

If you used one of the US carriers unlimited data plans when they had them available, you would have been throttled, cutoff, and then removed from the plan for abuse.

Edit by admin: some offensive and abusive language removed.

Ok I am going to continue to use as much data as I possibly can.

Its no secret canada has horrendous mobile rates. The major wireless providers in canada continue to gougue canadian consumers with absurd rates and plans. They bully up and coming companys with market share. They sign exclusive deals with cell phone manufacturers so you have to go outside of the country to buy the new devices without being locked in on a carrier. They payoff politicians to exert influenece in government to avoid regulation that would force them to change their practices or to use the same regulation to keep out threats to their business.

I am sure everyone of the members of this forum could recount horrendous experiences in dealing with these companys. That is ultimately why you ended up coming to speakout I would imagine. The fact that you are posting in a thread talking about usage of data means that you all want to use data but do not want to pay the current rates offered on the major carrierrs.

I can not change the business practices of the major carriers but I can as a consumer choose to protest such wrongs with where I spend my dollars. Speakout has given me the platform to protest with their UMB and so I use it to do so.

These carriers have continued to profit on the ignorance of the average consumer. Any one who does not take advantage of the unlimited plan because they are worried about losing it are selfish and not seeing the bigger picture. You would rather the status quo remain and have the majority of canadians continue to be gouged so that you can save yourself a couple of dollars.

I for one would rather continue my heavy usage. Does this mean that I might lose the plan offered by speakout currently. It might but I would rather use the plan excessively untill its gone than continue playing to the status quo of ridiculous data caps and horrendous rates.

I have said it another thread and I will say it again. We should all use as much data as possible and encourage everyone we know to do the same. It will help to show there is a market for heavy data usage and it will force the major carriers to adjust to demand or let other companys that are more willing to cater to the market flourish.

I

I have no problem with the unlimited browsing package as it is. I just use it for webmail from my ISP, checking weather and weather radars and reading the news sites when I'm on the move. Only thing I wish that SOs phone offerings had a better browser, the Nokia WAP browser is a piece of hsit. Try even making bookmarks with that pig, such joy. it would be nice if Opera worked on the C3 but no matter what I tried, it doesn't work except with WiFi.

The deal that exists now is just fine and those of you who are sucking in massive amounts of data are going to screw it up for us all so buggar off elsewhere. It is what it is.

The abuse policy is simple. If you are of the top 5% of data (UMB or otherwise) you will be given a warning. Abuse it again and subject yourself to MASSIVE throttling. Abuse it again and lose your account all together.

Actually I'm fine with the throttle. I would pay $3/month for 'unlimited' data with the understanding that anything over 10mb in a month would be HIGHLY THROTTLED. Youtube would be useless, Skype, after a certain amount of calls would become unuseable. Anything 'streaming' become unuseable.

The odd check on google, and more importantly, my mail for exchange would still work.

But really, the target SO customer is an infrequent user that wants general voice connectivity, not 365 data abuse.

The voice market over3g and gsm networks are highly profitable since no one really uses their cell phone to talk anymore. I think they allow this abuse to happen because the margins on voice calls are still good. If your abuse affects their voice margins, you can expect change.

Not wanting to defend using 1gb a week, but if SO/Rogers assumed only 50mb a month on dumb phones none that support netflix or heavy data apps, why would they sell stand alone SIM cards for use in none SO phones?

That being said, even using, a reduced to "1gb a week", is about 4 times what is considered normal use and is clearly taking advantage of the situation. The logic that high use will bring down prices is ridiculous. It only fuels their claim of clogging pipe lines due to high use and justify high use plans at high $. Anyway they can make a buck off the users.

It would be nice if they could come out with an abuse policy so the non-abusers don't lose a good thing because of the few data heavy.

UMB is simple from a technical perspective a HTTP proxy setup, no more, no less. This is done in many corporations all the time.

Rogers may one day so no more data for you(SO) and this may be dropped but whoever using it via autoproxy or that the OS already has good support(iOS), is not against any policy unless you want to stick in 'you can only using a specific browser' policy as well.

Do I like that if SO drop this ? noop. But he is not against the stated policy. Let's not discuss about intend.

Well not really. Are any of Speakouts phones even capable of playing youtube or netflix? Somehow I don't think so. I think Speakout leased the Rogers network under the guise of it being simple dumbphone data, and an estimated usage of no more than 50MB a month. Speakout just turned a blind eye to those of us that got ahold of SIMs and threw them in our smartphones, but one day Rogers will get wise to it and call them on it. Think about it, if SO was selling true smartphone data, why wouldn't the sell a low end smartphone and advertise the heck out of it? My guess is that Rogers will not allow them to.

for all fairness, while I am also low usage user(only for messaging via activesync/gv) he is using it the way UMB is allowed. It just happens that HTTP has become the MOAP(which is actually a good thing).

Sigh... I really hope that high data users do not ruin things for us casual users like myself. Some of us just need occasional browser access to look up addresses, bus schedules, and other information. We don't need or want to be able to watch sports and movies and TV shows on our phones.

I use the UMB for a long time. However, I always use wifi at home and office, even in some malls. I only use Speakout 3G once a week when I'm outside with my son. if I'm outside, I open 3G and run VOIP app for freephoneline in case someone call me. I think maybe this is the reason my Speakout 3G still not blocked.

15 GB in two weeks is excessive and you are just simply being greedy and taking advantage of an already good deal. Its now wonder that Rogers proxied the network again! What you did was abuse plain and simple. Kinda like a restaurant that puts a bowl of candies at the door. There's alway one idiot that feels he has the right to fill his pockets and take them all.
