I learned something new! Speakout SMS rates never really concerned me because I already send free SMS messages through my browser with Google Voice, so I am less concerned about the price Speakout charges! Sadly, getting a Google Voice SMS number requires a US IP address and access to a US phone number to set up the account, (a proxy and free VOIP number can be obtained usually for free) but after that is done, Google does not check for your American credentials.

It depends on if Speakout will offer a texting plan. If you crank up the texting rates, it makes moderate users think more about a texting plan, but sometimes they decide it is better to switch carriers. It will be interesting to see if this move will make Rogers more money. I have my doubts.

Starting March 16th, the rate for Rogers and Fido customers will go from 15 to 20 cents per outgoing text message. It remains to be seen as to how this will affect Speak Out Wireless, which uses the Rogers network and currently charge 10 cents per outgoing text message (to the US and Canada).
