That's interesting as all Speak Out phones are supposed to come pre-activated. I'm starting to think your phone was a return, and was already activated by the previous owner. When you called the toll free number with the activation code, it gave you a new number for the phone.

I recently bought a new SO phone, and expected to find a phone number printed inside the box, as stated in this blog; not so ! When I got it out of the box, a card showd a toll free number that needed to be called from a landline to activate.
It was just a recording, asking for the printed 'activation code' and quickly gave my new phone number. Slightly different from what I had read, but no biggy.
