When you buy a $25 airtime card, can you send and receive text (SMS) messages? Or, do you need to purchase a SMS add-on?

No, you can send individual texts. The amount per text is just deducted from your balance.

Incoming text messages are free, which seems as though it should be the standard way things work everywhere, but is not.

One disadvantage of SO is that it doesn't seem possible to send text messages to "short codes", only to full 10-digit phone numbers.
