I got it cleared up: it turns out that the folks who take care of SpeakOut customers also take care of PetroCan customers, and the nice fellow I talked to when I reactivated my time (with minutes saved after expiry, phew) figures that the first guy I talked to was confused about which provider I was on.

Now I am even happier to be a SpeakOut customer and not a PetroCan customer.

Good to know about the $0.99 fee though.

Thanks!

I'm glad it worked out for you. In my opinion that's one huge advantage Speak Out has over Petro Canada. No matter what top-up you buy, it will last a year.

Still, their computer system should be able to determine the carrier from your phone number and then present options to the CSR that are customized to that carrier. Since SO doesn't offer 6-month extensions, that option should not have been available to the CSR.

I just found out that my minutes had expired after only six months. It turns out that this is because I loaded only a small number of minutes onto my phone. I thought that Speak Out minutes expired after a year (one of the features I like about this phone since I only use it for emergencies).

Anyone else know anything about this change? It took me rather by surprise.

All Speak Out top-ups last a year. Did you maybe use up your airtime? Keep in mind that Speak Out deducts a fee of $0.99 a month, so this may have depleted your account.

Whenever you want to check your balance and expiry date, just call *777. It's a free call. I would also suggest calling Speak Out customer service to look into this. That's the first thing I would do.
