Some of us feel the 365 is the key to our using Speakout.
I think the Canadian topography and climate is a lot more difficult to operate in. What are wages, corporate taxes, social benefit costs. There's a lot to assess.
I would compare to the USA and my T-mobile prepaid is not that different than Speakout.

Should we 'blame' Speakout or their network carrier Rogers for the costs of their prepaid plan.
Lets compare a basic non-plan prepaid rates with a country of a similar size and population -- Australia. The most popular prepaid service in Australia is Amaysim.

SIM Cards
Speakout - $10
Amaysim - $2

SMS
Speakout - 10c
Amaysim - 12c

Talk
Speakout - 25c/minute local, 45c/minute long distance (includes other parts of Canada)
Amaysim - 12c/minute ANYwhere in Australia, 6c/minute long distrance to Canada!

Data
Speakout - $10/100MB for 30 days
Amaysim - 5c/MB (nothing special required, it's just deducted from your prepaid account as used)

Prepaid term
Speakout - 365 days
Amaysim - 90 days
Both rollover when accounts are topped up.

Network
Both are carried on national networks.

Customer Service
Speakout - one word to describe so far would be "chippy".
Amaysim - friendly, courteous and helpful.

So I guess you could say that Speakout is the best in the Canadian class of chronic under-achievers, but maybe they can aspire to something better from down under.
