Hmm....

If you go to the page that Nick posted, in the top right corner there are some picks of the OLD Nokia 1600 (not 1680) with a little sign that says 'Free phone with $100 airtime purchase'. Then you could click on it and up comes the details about it (which bylo posted).

Is that what you were talking about Nick?

And if you do have a video, post it on YouTube and then post the link here. Easy as that.

Notice it says and shows the 1208. It also says that if you want any other SO phone, they'll give you a $74 discount (which is the regular price on the 1208.)

I'm so pissed with 7-11 right now. On their website link when you click on the free phone offer with 100.00 purchase of airtime I get the new black 1680 Nokia come up as the free phone. Customer service is saying at first that it is a misprint and after speaking with another customer service agent and then the manager James, he said he does not see the 1680 as the phone that is coming up but rather the 1208 cheaper phone.

I think this is a misleading scam and don't fall for it. Once u r at the 7-11 its easy to just accept the scam and go with the cheaper phone but I didn't. Too bad they wont admit to this.

Here is the link I am talking about.
http://speakout7eleven.ca/pages/phones/

Tell me what you guys see when you click on the free phone link with 100.00 purchase of airtime. At this point they have no credibility with me.

Take Care
It took me a year and a half and countless hours and much frustration to clear up a messy situation a few years ago. And during the holiday season when clerks are overworked and overstressed is the prime time for such thieves to hit. Go through it once or know someone that has and you would change your tune.

What's the big deal with stores asking to see some ID when you use a credit card?

The big deal is that it's none of their business! Worse, why should I trust them with my personal information? After all my driver's license, SIN (yes, the bozos have asked for that), etc. can be used by one of their employees in conjunction with my credit card number to steal my identity and commit fraud against me. No thanks!

The whole purpose of a credit card is that it's a self-contained piece of ID that allows you to buy stuff without cash in hand. The credit card company vouches for me by way of that card. If a merchant suspects something is wrong with that card then they are free -- indeed required by their Merchant's Agreement -- to call the card company. They are not free -- indeed proscribed from -- to ask me for other ID.

And yes, part of the fees that merchants pay the CCs and that some of us pay in interest is used to pay for breaches in security, just as part of the taxes you pay to the government pays for policing. However, that hardly justifies the creation of a police state or other such measures that violate our privacy and basic freedoms.

WADR it's people who submit to merchant's arbitrary requests for information they don't need that leads to an attitude of entitlement on their part and complacency such as yours.

Sorry for the rant, but you pressed one of my hot buttons.

What's the big deal with stores asking to see some ID when you use a credit card?

Fortunately, things have shifted in recent years in favour of the credit card holder if there is any dispute with a credit card - which is great news. But that also means that the merchant will be out of pocket and screwed over.

Compare that to years ago when you had to argue your case to your credit card company and try to prove that it wasn't you that made the purchase.

I much prefer things today, and if that means that merchants need to check ID every so often, then so be it.

Whenever crooks try to buck the system, it's the average person that gets screwed, either by higher prices, stores not accepting credit cards anymore, etc etc.

Just ask them to show you the clause in the Merchant Agreement they have with VISA or MasterCard that requires them to see your ID. Guess what, there isn't one. In fact most Merchant Agreements expressly forbid the merchant from requiring anything more than the credit card itself. That includes that other favourite, your phone number.

Tell the store manager that if they insist on supplementary documentation, not only will you not do business with them but you will also report them to VISA or MasterCard. Make sure to record the manager's name as well as the date/time and related data to include with your complaint.

Asking for ID with credit card seems to be starting at a number of places - I live in Penticton and the Canadian Tire & Rona stores do, Walmart even asked the other day (maybe as purchase over $100) first time asked there; my son in Surrey had Home Depot ask for ID there - local 7-11 doesn't??

Why not? Doesn't it roam in Canada on Rogers? Granted roaming fees may be rapacious but unless you plan to do a lot of calling roaming may be cheaper than a SO SIM plus airtime. Plus you get to use the same phone number.
