From HoFo...

Nokia 1680 classic will be added to the line-up... $89, available in mid December. Just in time for the $74 off with the $100 airtime purchase promo.

Yeah, I got one and its locked to SO & Rogers. I was planning to use a Fido sim, so anyone planning to buy an unlocked SO cell should avoid this model. I'm also thinking that any new phones will be locked from now on....

I jut got an email back from Speak Out customer service, and they told me that the Nokia 1680 is supposed to be unlocked.

But I just bought one two days back and its locked. I got it to use with a fido sim and it wont accept. It will accept only rogers and speakout sims.

That's fine. Just repeating what Speak Out customer service told me when I asked if the Nokia 1680 was unlocked or not. They told me it was indeed unlocked. It doesn't seem to be though.

From HoFo

Confirmed with my unit! I have a bunch of foreign, active SIMs to try... It is LOCKED! If all 1680 from SpeakOut are locked, then it has bucked the trend with lineup up to date. Remember, the only exception before 1680c is some of the 2610 reportedly locked to Rogers / SpeakOut.

1680c is a BB5 model, which cannot be unlocked easily with the DCT-3/4 code calculator.

So it is confirmed locked. Looks like Speak Out customer service wasn't telling me the truth when I emailed them about it 🙂

Not easily according to the HoFo post above. Good luck breaking BB5 at home for less than the cost of an unlocked phone.

Hi
Bylo check my posts in the phone exchange forum....
I unlock phones on ebay as a buisness on the side

I have figured out that I can unlock this phone. I need to test it though. Anyone want their Nokia 1608 unlocked for a small fee if I get it to work hahaha ?

To each his own and all that, but when one can buy new and refurbished unlocked phones for as little as $25 it doesn't sound to me like that's a viable business.

In this category of cheap phones its not a viable business but when its Blackberry Bolds and Storms its totally worth it. Whens its $15 for an unlock or $1100 for another Storm, which would you choose ?
