definitely would be a good move for 7-eleven speakout to start selling the simcard by themselves. I know in asia, prepaid cards can be bought with a simcard for almost no extra fee.

Yes.

There should be some for sale on the Forum.

Unfortunately SpeakOut does not sell SIMs on their own. Not sure why not, as it could be a money-maker and potentially get them more clients.

To use an iPhone with SpeakOut (or any GSM service other than AT+T in the US) you have to provide your own SIM, buy an iPhone, and jailbreak the phone so it will accept any SIM.

Apparently the iPhone works fine with SpeakOut, it's just that you don't have access to data from the phone provider and are limited to using Wifi for your data. Which isn't a bad thing considering how much we're hosed for data in Canada.

Hopefully SpeakOut will offer the cheaper Nokia 1208 that their sister company PetroCanada Mobility offers for $50, which would make it cheaper for people who have their own GSM phones to start using SpeakOut.

Sorry to sound like an idiot. But do I need to have a SIM specifically from SpeakEasy to use their service? I really don't want to pay so much money for their phones, and have access to a Sony Ericsson w801i.

I don't imagine that they sell SIMs without buying one of their phones?

I'm curious as to how you are using you iPhone with this service. Did you have to buy a phone from SpeakEasy + buy an iPhone and then swap in the SIM?

data plans in Canada are ridiculus

You're right! What can I say? Rogers owns all GSM towers and thus have a monopoly in Canada for this technology. They are making big bucks from these high charges for data and don't want to give it up.

If Rogers were to introduce the iPhone in Canada they would have to reduce their data rates by (so I've been told) to around 1/3 or more of their current level and stand to loose a big time with their business customers if they matched these rates.

SO does not support advanced data services and since they use Rogers as their service provider, I doubt Rogers would allow SO the capability to compete with it in this area.

I ask, cause many with iPhones (in Canada) have been dinged on rogers sims for data usage even without EDGE set up on their account...want to avoid

Thanks for any help!
