I had posted the same concern about incoming spam text messaging, on the Forum, but did not get a reply.

Looks like it is not a concern at this time.

Sam said:

If I interpret that correctly, it means your balance could get eaten up very quickly through 'spam' text messages, and even by "informational" messages sent to you by 7-11.

At most you'd get charged 5c/msg so that's 20 for $1. It would take quite a concerted spam barrage to eat up your balance. AFAIK there's no charge for incoming or outgoing calls from/to 7-11 customer service.

Does anyone know if text messaging can be turned off? Or is there another way to avoid unwanted messages?

I'm not aware of any. I'm also not concerned that it's a problem.

Has this been a real problem to date? I'd like to hear comments from any users who have been with 7-11 for a while.

I ported two existing cell numbers to 7-11. Neither of us have ever received an unsolicited call or text from anyone while we've been on SpeakOut (or on Bell Mobility before that) apart from the occasional "wrong number."

According to the 7-11 brochure, you'll get nicked for each text message you receive, whether or not you read it, and whether or not you wanted it.
