As for net hogs burning 100GB/mo, the only
question for SO is how does the competition
handle it???

!

They charge $10/GB for overage, so those who are complaining that SO cut them off their $10UMB plan for 10GB overage really need to cram it.

The UMB plan is not meant for those who want to fully feature their phones.

The cynical side of me says that they only make phones that are functional only by consuming large amounts of data, therefore keeping telcomms happy.

Oh yeah, and also collect personal data about you and sell it to others.

Personally, I'd prefer that they provide a reasonable per KB rate similar to a per minute rate so that if I really need to check my email or some other data.

Actually, I'm suggesting that SO would be directly competitive with
other "unlimited" plans. In the case of Public Mobile they are
also now offering unlimited voice/text/data at $40 for 1 year.

I'm merely suggesting an option for SO that would see
them on average charge $10/month for 2GB in total likely
for most customers. It allows really light users to extend
the advantages of SOs voice plans to data as well. And
it would make SO directly competitive with other
players who are flogging $35 UMD plans.

Naturally if SO can't make a buck at it they won't
do it. But then there is still the question of how
the competition does it???

That's $40/month for 1 year which is a lot different than$40/year

Correct.

OTOH, a $5/GB plan limited to (e.g.) $35/mo
wouldn't actually kill SO anymore than their current
by the minute voice plans, which could easily amount
to phone service at $25/yr if your not a heavy user.

In fact it likely would fly easily for SO
and most of their customers.

As for net hogs burning 100GB/mo, the only
question for SO is how does the competition
handle it???

Technically, even Rogers has $6/Gb data plans...
But you have to buy $60/mo worth. Oh, and
they actually were flogging a $5/Gb one as well

Not what you mean, of course, but you can see

It would be nice if Speakout also offered something in-between UMB and Full Data. For example, besides TCP port 80 and 443, I would like port 5223 open for push notifications (push emails, push text and imessage, etc) and still have unlimited umb. BTW, I already asked Speakout if they plan on offering a plan like this and the answer is no. I don't use much 3G data. I use about 200 MB a month. I guess the argument is that I don't need all additional 65000 TCP ports open, just 1 more port.

Are there others like myself who would like to see a plan like this?

unlimited 3G full data @ 10 was a flop. I haven't seen that kind of pricing except may be in Europe.

I continue to say keep the UMB and not full data.

...

Just a thought. It doesn't have to be either/or.

For e.g. they could charge $5/GB ( roughly the current Rogers "deal" )
on a GB basis. That means you use 0GB you pay nothing, you use
2GB you pay $10. This is a bit like current SpeakOut minutes.

OTOH, at some point ( e.g. $30 - $35 ) in any given month,
then the invoice is capped. That means that at say after $30 worth
of GB in any month, the service becomes "unlimited" for
that month.

Typically, if you don't use streaming sources,
( e.g. netflix, yourtube, etc ) it takes some
work to exceed 2GB/month ( like you dl the
latest full up SUSE iso file type of deal ) so
this should easily make a lot of people happy,
make SpeakOut competitive ( with say PublicMobile )
and keep the company in cash.

There are options out there, so why
sweat it?

This is an excellent reply, to which I have a question; does the current $10/mo apply to gps functionality or would that feature only work with the 'full data' rollout? I'm looking for a data-only plan. I've read that Rogers/Bell offer a SIM for $7/mo?

GPS locational is actually more complicated. The current Android device actually uses the cell towers to help get it's location. AKA aGPS (Assisted GPS). As GPS are not necessary accurate or stable in consumer devices, and also draws power.

The key question here is whether your Android will be able to get Cell tower assistant... and the answer is... YES, it does get help from the cell tower to get it's location because all the device need to know is where that cell tower is, and Roger does provide that information to the phone. Which means your android locational service is just about as good as whether it have full data plan on another wireless provider with no data on it.

As for using Google map, the post prior to mine answers it.

Google map app from Android works as long as you have autoproxy or proxydroid. It works quite well. 3G speed is plenty to download map data to use with the navigation app from Android. You no longer need to load maps locally on your SD card. As long as you are in Rogers mobile signal, you can use the Google map navigation. You always get the latest map from Google which is quite convenient when entering new developed area.

Only drawback is 3G sucks battery life big time, so you have to constantly plug it into the cigarette adapter and it barely charges while you use 3G and navigation.

Currently, UMB aka unlimited browsing is a data plan that is limited to port 80 / 443. Which only allow access to http:// and https:// for the most part. Just for browsing. This, for example, won't allow you to check e-mail directly from an app, cause imap access port 143, no google voice search / Apple sirius, no app store, and most VOIP software without any workaround apps like a proxy app, which requires root access to your device for Android phone, won't work.

A full data plan would be one where it allows most of the common port, which is commonly known as a full data access. Which means it will be the same as your home internet connection and large majority of the programs are expected to work. It is also possible that the full data plan will be faster, too.

Overall it depends on your needs. Currently the UMB plan on SO is very good, it provides the market a unique product where we can't get anywhere else. A full data plan, unless priced very well, are not going to add much to the market, and generally speaking, not worth losing /damaging the UMB offering.

This is an excellent reply, to which I have a question; does the current $10/mo apply to gps functionality or would that feature only work with the 'full data' rollout? I'm looking for a data-only plan. I've read that Rogers/Bell offer a SIM for $7/mo?

Hello,

SpeakOut Wireless is working on a full data plan which we hope to introduce sometime this year, however we do not have any further details available at this time.

Thank You,

unlimited 3G full data @ 10 was a flop. I haven't seen that kind of pricing except may be in Europe.

I continue to say keep the UMB and not full data.

There are other options like bell prepaid or koodo prepaid which offers reasonable pricing for data/voice/sms combination. Just go that route if full data is really that important(which honoursly speaking not that critical).

I know how to and have the setup in place but don't even bother to turn it.

Using cell mobile data for VOIP is just the wrong way of doing it, IMO. No matter how good your codec is, it is just not reliable given the cell mobile data nature. cell company's voice has QoS that is way ahead.

I would welcome a data plan, but not at the expense of the UMB. Hopefully speak out will listen to there customers. If you own a smart phone you could go to straight data and sign up with a compnay providing Voip (like Fongo). Or the could just give us the free data like back at the end of 2011
