1. Even if SO/PCM offer data, you may not like the rates they charge for it.

you got that right, i just did the math and if they keep the same rate 4c/kb = $40/mb OUCH!!!!

The lowest cost "starter" phones like the 1208 are intended just for voice and text. They don't support data. That's not been a problem since SO and PCM don't support data currently, but if/when they do, you'll need to upgrade your phone.

A couple of other points:
1. Even if SO/PCM offer data, you may not like the rates they charge for it.
2. Even phones that have data capability often have such small screens that it's hardly a practical solution unless you're really desperate. If you plan to use data you may want to upgrade to a PDA-like device such as a BlackBerry or iPhone.

Hi Byron,

I would say, yes, you would have to buy a new phone that's listed as data capable on the official SpeakOut site. The 1208 is not listed as data capable.

Hmmm assuming data is on the way (WAP only I suspect) would I have to buy a newer phone? I have a 1208 now and don't see any options in the settings for internet, but maybe they have locked that option out?

thx bylo! i never knew about that site, link bookmarked 😀

just goes to show there's always something new to learn...

and now that i think of it, charging 4c/kb for the mobile store might be an early indication that SO is taking baby steps toward the long promised realm of data plans (w00t!)

Got a text from SO dated Aug 6 stating "Fee to browse Mobile Store is $.04 per kilobyte"

Anyone else get this? It must new because it used to free to browse the store so long as you didn't buy / download anything.
