Speakout UMB is a 'web browsing plan' not a full access 'data plan'. Apps like WhatsApp that do not function like web browsers will not work as they do not use port 80 (the only port open on the Rogers network).

There is a workaround, however, using a proxy app to redirect App traffic through port 80 so most Apps including WhatsApp will work. There are many threads in the forum that talks about how to set it up. Do a search in the forum for 'proxy'.

I get mix message on whatsapp. I personally don't use it so can't tell.

If it is not http/https based, it most likely would not. Based on their FAQ, they seem to be using port 5222/3 so probably like gtalk/imessage which does not work on UMB.

you would not regret getting the UMB for 10/month. It is restricted to http/https via 80/433.

It is unlimited(well fair use clause applies) and most iOS works like a charm including hotmail/gmail(not yahoo mail though), corporate exchange in activesync.

What would not work include iMessage and most IM and of course VOIP.

In actual usage though, I never find an app which makes me think 'this UMB is useless'.

The iPhone 3g is full size sim, iPhone 4 & 4s is the smaller sim – unless you have a dual sim adaptor – which I do have, so the sim size is not an issue.

However, you have answered my question, thank you. I require a data plan – unless it costs an arm and a leg?

I'm not an iPhone user, but I believe that the iPhone requires a micro sim. Speakout only sells the full size one, so you would be faced with getting the sim properly cut.

Speakout offers a web browsing plan, not a data plan. So I don't know which, if any, apps will work without jailbreaking and setting up proxies. A bit technical.

You might be best just to find a cheap unlocked quad band phone to bring with you and buy a Speakout sim for it. That would cost you $10 plus $25 air credit (that's the minimum you can purchase) + taxes.

Shut down all data on the iPhone and use wifi-only for your apps.

Hello,

I am coming to Vancouver for three weeks and need a local sim for my iphone. What I cannot clarify is do the 7/11 deals include roaming data? Not sure if the term roaming data is used in canada, as you may call this something else... and hence my question.

All calls will be local, whereas a few text may not. I would like to use many of my iPhone apps but not sure if they will work or not.

If someone could clarify this I would be most grateful

Morrile
