Being a cellphone user for many many years and trying pretty much at one point using all the providers out there (it's a monopoly...really is), it's so good to know that there are other options out there. I was looking for a bargain and I already have a unlock GMS phone, so this is perfect. I don't think 7-eleven is giving out for free the lastest flip phone, but never the less it's still a great deal for those that want to have a stylish phone (that probably costs around $50 dollars after the rebate). If you think about, all the other providers requires at least a 3yr contract in order to have a free phone. Right now, there is an "insider plan" for $17.30 with telus, but you do need to sign a contract for 3yrs in order to get that rate (it gives you unlimited evenings after 6pm and weekends plus 200 minutes during the day) but keep in mind, you still need to pay that ridiculous licensing fee $6.95 and to get voicemail, texting, and extras, well it will cost you. So, 7-eleven is definitely cheaper in the long run and for those who uses their cells frequently, then they might want to check out the lastest offer with 7-eleven that gives you pretty much the same at $40 a month, no contract and that's apparently phone usage across canada. Now, try to see if those big guys match up with that plan....I don't think so and I'm sure they are doing everything they can not to compare themselves to 7-eleven. Thank-God there's an economical option out there for cell phone use, 'cause the rest with those big shots are nothing but seeking to squeeze every penny out of you as much as possible and for as long as possible. Hopefully, more and more people will know about these plans with 7-eleven and not just think of 7-eleven as a place to get their big gulps.

Why drive from Quebec City to Ottawa for a 7-11 phone? You will also have to do that every time you need more air time.
Go to you local Petro Canada station and buy one of their phones. It operates on the same Rogers network. The only difference is that their air time last 180 days instead of 365, but it will save a lot of trips from Quebec City to Ottawa!!!

Thanks for responding. It tuns out I was able to get someone I know in Ottawa to purchase it for me. However, I must admit I will probably eat through 100 minutes in less than 6 months and so Petro-Can is probably the better way to go.

Thanks for the heads-up!

However...

If you want the FM radio (nice while riding the bus);

Like the cheap camera (great for comparison shopping when you forget your pen and paper);

Could use the 1 min Voice recorder (good for a quick memory item when you haven't got a string to tie on your finger);

And, best of all you like to synchronize your bluetooth equipped computer contacts list with your cell phone (I don't want to have to keep two address books organized or key the extra one into the phone)...

...then the $50 might just be worth it.

Or you could just save that $50 and put the money towards your own "ideal" phone (unlocked GSM phone of course) and sell the 1600 without it's SIM card (because your using it in your "ideal" phone).

Any way you look at it, I feel it's a win win situation.

Just curious. I assume the party your son was calling did disconnect after the call. Does it mean even after the other party disconnects, the 7-11 sim is charged until itself is disconnected?

I just bought a $50 voucher, on the voucher, It now reads "expire 365 after activation". On another paragraph it reads "Subject to 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless Terms of Serve. See terms at http:www//www.7eleven.com. Use within one year."
Does this mean that you have one year to activate the voucher now?

The policy has not changed, to my knowledge. The voucher MUST BE ACTIVATED WITHIN 90 DAYS of purchase date. Then you have 365 days to USE the minutes.

Still, a good deal. If all you want is a cheap emergency phone, buy the 1600 for $114(taxes included). If you activate it within the 90 days and use the minutes within 365 days from that point, it would work out to $7.6/month.

On the voucher it says it has to be activated withing 90 days, and lasts for 365 days after activation. However it rolls over if you add more money to the account. Since the minimum is $25 that brings it down , after the first year, to only $1.90/mo. And remember you got a free phone as well.

Be careful My son did not check to make sure that his phone was disconnected after a call, and it stayed connected until there was only $.19 in the account.

So, for emergencies, it is by far the cheapest thing around. Just make sure you make one call every three months so they do not think the phone is inactive.
