SpeakOut is probably doing this deal because it's trying to get more users and because it thinks that a lot of people buy cellphones in the spring/summer.

I used to be with Fido many years ago (and have been spoiled with the far superior mobile phone providers in Europe for the past 6 years) however, I have done some research and figured out the following:

Even if I spend $25/month on Speakout, it's still cheaper than $25/month on a pay monthly plan from any of the competitors - those won't give you free voicemail or call display AND they charge you extorionate System Access Fees of up to $9/month on top of the 99 cent 911-fee that we pay on Speakout.
All told, even a basic "$25/month" plan from Rogers/Fido, etc. ends up costing over $35/mo!

Of course, if Speakout changed to per-second billing, I would have no more thoughts whatsoever of changing providers! 🙂

When you buy $25 in airtime, it costs you $25 plus GST and provincial sales tax if any.

And then it's 20cent/min afterwards. You are not charged an additional amount of tax as you use it, since you already paid the tax when you purchased it.
