Thanks for the comments. One more question.

If I am making a phone call to the 416 area from within the 705 area,
which call is more expensive than the other, or are they both the same cost?

- using a phone with a 705 number
or
- using a phone with a 416 number

If you have a phone with a 705 area code and call to the 416 area, it will be charged long distance.

If you have a phone with a 416 area code and call to the 416 area, it will be charged as a local call.

However, if you have a 416 base phone and call a 705 number (while in the 705 area code), you will be charged long distance.

ALL outgoing calls back to your home area code (the area code the phone was activated in) will be charged as a local call, REGARDLESS of where you are in Canada.

Here's a copy and paste from the official site:

“While travelling, will my outgoing calls be long distance if they are local to the city I am visiting?” question arrow
“Yes. You are charged long distance charges for any calls while outside your local calling area. Your phone number is assigned to the area you designate your local area.”

Unfortunately, Speakout's local calling area does not include all of Ontario.

If you have a 416 or 905 number, the local calling area would include: 416/647, 905/289, 519/226. That's a good portion of south/southwestern Ontario, but does not include northern Ontario codes like 705 or 807.

If you mean dialout, it may be so.

I was thinking about similar thing when I acquired the dell voice number(604 or 778). The difference I believe is for the caller who call you. If a 250(victoria) number calls 604, it becomes LD to them but 778 is local call.

So it is a matter of if you want to benefit people call you.

I ended up picking 604 though as that is easier to remember and more 'vancouver'

Unless corrected, I believe the whole province is a local calling area for Speakout. So you might as well register for the 416 area code.

Good luck in getting a 416 area code from Speakout though. 416 codes are as rare as hen's teeth. You will likely get a 905 or something similar.

I am presently a satisfied SpeakOut user for a phone in the Toronto area.

I have purchased another sim card for a phone that will be used exclusively
for a cottage in the 705 area code. There is the occasional call within the 705 area,
but the majority of the calls will be to the 416 area code.

Which area code should I have my phone registered in?
Will my charges be more or less the same or is one of them cheaper?
