Number porting question

I picked up an iPhone 3GS as a Christmas gift for my teenage daughter. I'd like to activate a SIM, add a $100 voucher and activate the data and text bundles so I don't have to do it on Christmas day (if they will even be open). Problem is she is on Telus pay and talk right now and ideally I'd like to port over the number. Would I be able to do that after Christmas if I set up the phone now, or must the port be done on a virgin SIM?

If you activate the sim now, they will give you a temporary number. Then after Christmas, just call in and have the number ported over. Just make sure the Telus number remains active until you do it as they can't port an unactive number.

When the Telus number is ported over to the new Speak Out SIM, will the balance on the Speak Out SIM be affected? If you're going to put $100 of airtime to the Speak Out SIM, you want to be sure that it isn't lost when the Telus number replaces the Speak Out number. (I think this question has been asked and answered on this forum already…)

When you port a number in, the balance on the destination card is unaffected, but you lose the balance on the source card.

Another good reason not to port right away, gives me a chance to run down her telus balance.
