Jack, a fellow Speak Out user, has forwarded me this handy matrix that shows which calls are local and which calls are long distance for the major area codes in Canada:
http://www.speakoutwireless.ca…..g82008.pdf
As general rule, calls within the same area code are local calls. This makes Speak Out unique where the same area code might be split across places that are traditionally "long distance" to each other.
Note that the file is current as of August 8, 2008, and that Speak Out might change those rules without informing us.

Neat! That means most of SW Ontario is local, i.e. 416, 905 and 519 along with the new overlays are all local. So that explains why in the past I thought I was getting a "bonus" when calling from 519 to 905.
BTW what does "NPA" (upper left corner) stand for.

Apparently NPA = Numbering Plan Area, or the official term for an area code:

So I can call anywhere in the 250 area code and it won't be LD? I live on the island and I travel to work past the LD boundary.. this would be great!
Means I could call Prince George from the Island and no LD!!
EDIT… Nope, get the 'please stand by.. in the future please dial 1 in front of your call to avoid blah blah blah' when I call Prince George from the Island.

Despite the fact that they say that you should dial 1, I don't think it will be charged as a long distance call if you are calling a 250 number from a 250 number. Try it out for a very short call, and check your balance before and after.

wow.. learned something new today!
.25$ difference for a 30 second call to prince george.. bizzare.
Now riddle me this – If I travel to Vancouver, what area code is now local? 604/778?. If I call back to the island is it long distance, or if I make a call to vancouver is that long distance?
I've never really got a straight answer on this… DOH.

Your question about roaming has been debated a few times on this forum and I don't know the definitive answer. I'll have to defer to the experts on this.

My understanding is – if you place a call from your home area code location within the same area code, it is local call – if you place call from outside your home area code location to the current area code you are in or back to your home area code location, it will be long distance. When we tested this back several months ago, it cost .45 per min. That's your report from Puerto Vallarta for today
