i just got a SO phone
i never got a text telling me how to activate voicemail
so i just pressed 1
it asked for a voicemail phone number
i entered my own phone number
reading this forum, i think that's not right
and when i press 1, it just hangs up after i press it
how do i change the voicemail number stored in my phone to the correct one so that i get my voicemail when i press 1

My memory is a little foggy as it is awhile since I did the exact same thing. I think that I called support and they told me to delete the number I had entered, and then to repeat the process (without entering anything at all) which resolved any outstanding issues.

If in doubt call up support and they will help….
