Am excited to share this bit of information.

I phoned speak out yesterday regarding why speakout does not carry quad band phones, and the lady told me that about 1-2 weeks back we can use the nokia phones purchased at 7-eleven overseas with a sim card if we unlock the phone.

To unlock the phone we must do the following...

Email Customer Service at customercare@ztarmobile.com
With your nokia model #
And the IMI barcode shown at the back of the battery

She said it involves a few steps but it will unlock the 7-eleven phone - it will say sucessful

Then when we go overseas we can stick in a local sim card and use it.

I forgot to ask in which countries it will work.

I purchased cheap mobile from 7-11 and i like it as it is compact and has a camera lightwight and the fonts a large.
And will be happy to know i could take it overseas with me. I am still to do it

If anyone knows why suddenly i cannot text overseas i told the lady so and she said i should turn the phone off and she would re-boot the phone.
but still it is not working.

SpeakOut Canada is only for use in Canada. They do not have any roaming agreements in place, even the USA. They have sold quad band phones in the past (like the Nokia 5130).

Please post your result.Thanks.

Hi
Yes you are right that there is no roaming i am not using it for roaming.
I am just using their unlocked phone (which will serve as a quad band phone to be used overseas) with an international sim card from the country i visit.

i just sent them an email yesterday and will let you know.

I also called them yesterday as for some unknow reason i cannot send sms text overseas which was possible previously. And i check with the gentleman again about the unlocking code and he did tell me the same which i mentioned above to send them an email and they will give you the code.

Also he said it can be used meaning just the phone in any foreign country.

Was it hard to unlock? also how do you know it works did you use your phone overseas with an overseas sim card?

Please note i was referring to just using the Nokia Phones purchased at 7-eleven - NOT their sim cards.

Thank you

just follow their instructions sent with the code, it is standard instruction you can find else where too.

I have an oversea roaming SIM which I have used for 10+ years and it didn't work on my C3 before unlock(ok with other early day petro-canada phone which is obviously not locked), now it can be used.

Hi
They gave me the code and i did all the steps, you are allowed 3 chances and the first time i did it i did not see the pound key# so i redid it.
The message in the end said the phone was not restricted - which i presume it is unlocked.

But now the question is how to check to see if it is working.

I would like to know that becos instead of carrying this phone thinking it is going to work overseas i dont want to have any difficulties there.

Anyway i also ordered online thru amazon.ca an unlocked samsung gsm phone it came to about 88.00 with shipping and handling including the phone price which was 84$.

The US amazon has cheaper phones but they do not ship to canada.

Thank you to all for your kind help

Hi thanks for posting the, code sent to me failed. I was following the steps exactly, so…They are investigating more now.
I bought from xscargo, a Kyocera -quadband, but now is discontinued.

I am looking forward to see what went wrong with my code!

I forgot to mention: plug in a FIDO SIM card, if it's working it's unlocked, if not ...bad luck.
Cheers!

i am not sure if fido is a good test. I sold my 1661 to a friend's daughter and she as far as I know use fido and I didn't do any unlock to that phone.

1661 was one of the unlocked phones that SO used to sell; That's why when FIDO SIM was put in was working with no problems/warnings.
Starting with Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, the phones came locked, in the package,... was kind of a surprise for me, at least...

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, came with the SO SIM -locked.

After the second attempt, with the new code sent for Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, unlocking was successful and I got the message : “ SIM / PHONE restriction OFF “.

VOILA, Nokia 5130 XpressMusic unlocked with one code, no cables no nothing! Awsome job SO!

I've been told the unlock codes are on hold for a couple weeks. Apparently they will be implementing a fee for them, but the details are not finalized. Anyone who requested the info before the hold will still get them for free.

I got the following email response:

Hello

Thank you for contacting customer care with your unlock code request. Due to popular demand, we are working to improve the unlock code process. We anticipate having this new process in place by September 1.

Please be advised that the new process will introduce an unlocking code fee of $25. This fee will be collected from your existing account balance.

We will keep your current request, and will reach out to you again prior to generating the code to get confirmation on the unlock code fee.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WE WILL NOT COLLECT THE UNLOCKING FEE UNTIL WE GET YOUR PRIOR CONSENT ONCE THE NEW PROCESS IS AVAILABLE.

Thank you for contacting Ztar Mobile.

Thank you Chimpanzee for trying out the sms text and Adrian for letting me know about the fido phone to check if unlocked.

Thank you to the other members for their input. Thank you for this SO forum

I tried the fido phone sim on my nokia unlocked phone and it worked fine.

Luckily i got the code before the 30$ charge.

Cheers

Another reason to regret the premature election triggered earlier this year. Bill C-560 did not become law. Had it become law, it would be short, sweet, and explicit: NO FEES.

Now is the time to write to your MP and ask them to reintroduce Bill C-560

do not contact us, we will contact you
