The only way you could check is put a Fido sim (or AT&T/T-Mobile sim) in it to see if it's locked or not. Chances are that it is locked. SpeakOut have been locking their phones lately.

thanks for the suggestion, i tested it with a fido card, the nokia 5200 is unlocked , hurray!
i can pick up a cheap sim in usa
