Hello, I recently picked up an iphone 3G locked to Rogers. I had to replace the battery in the iphone and it booted right up to the homepage with a SO SIM. I can detect my home network but it won't connect even when the WIFI is in open mode. Does a Rogers phone let a person use WIFI without having a data plan active? Or does it block you from using WIFI without a data plan? The iphone is not jailbroken or unlocked. I wonder if I have to JB & unlock to use the WIFI.
Thanks

You can use wifi on an iPhone with no sim whatsoever, and definitely do not need a data plan, or any kind of plan for that matter if a sim is inserted. Jailbreaking or unlocking won't solve anything as that has nothing to do with using WIFI. It is a hardware or user related issue.

Thanks for the reply.I've tried several WIFI networks and can't connect. I'm sure I read that Rogers didn't allow WIFI use without a data plan but I can't find the post. The BT works and can detect and join with other BT devices. The detected WIFIs have good signal with the iphone.I'll try it without the SIM.

My girlfriend is on Rogers PAYG with no data and uses WIFI all the time (She has a 3GS). If I put her sim in my phone (Iphone 4), WIFI works perfect. Have you tried completely restoring the phone. If it were my guess, I would say the hardware in your phone is kaput.

The question is has the phone ever been jailbroken or unlocked? I have seen the unlocking procedure kill wifi in several 3G iphones. One thing you could try is putting the phone in Airplane mode, then back in regular mode. If that doesn't solve it, try a complete restore and setting it up as a new phone.
