I am looking to replace an old candy bar phone with a better one for texting, checking emails and basic browsing for hopefully under 200. I have been browsing the threads here but the # of choices out there is overwhelming. From what I have gather, it looks like the nokia e71 and iphone 3g? What are some other viable options?

The Nokia C3 is about $75, and would certainly do what you need. I own a Nokia E71, and I love it. You can get used ones for about $150 on Kijiji. The Nokia E63 is also good, it is an E71 without GPS and a lesser quality camera. I do not use an Iphone, so I cannot comment.

The nokia c3 does sound like a viable option. I read that Speakout uses rogers' network, does that mean I can use a rogers locked c3 for speakout?

I notice that walmart is selling this nokia c3 phone for 60, but locked to at&t. Will it work on SO network after unlocking?

An unlocked AT&T C3 should work with Speakout. You can get Rogers C3 phones for about the same price, and you do not have to have it unlocked.
