I have the Air Canada app and I'm having trouble getting SMS messages from Air Canada when there are flight delays. At this point I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong or a problem with the app.
So is there any reason I shouldn't get SMS messages? Are they blocked by SO?

They are not supported by SpeakOut. I suggest you read the home page of this site, or the official SpeakOut site for your answer as well.

So after doing lots of reading I can't find a work around. Is there any other way of receiving a SMS perhaps having it forwarded from a different service like google?

Ok, thanks.
I guess sending a text from cell phone to cell phone works different that a SMS being sent, in this case from a company like Air Canada, is that why it doesn't work?

SpeakOut doesn't offer short codes, or multimedia texts (as already stated on the home page)
I would ask SpeakOut that question.

I did manage to find a solution that should suffice for me. I get the app to send an SMS as an email to (cell number)@pcs.Rogers.com. This way I receive an instant message. The message I get says there is a message from flightstatus@aircanada, so at least I now know right away there is a flight status change to one of my flights and all I have to do is check my emails for the details. Of course I can't reply to the SMS to actually read it, but it works for me
