My teen has a speakout phone 1616 now. But she also carries her itouch ipod everywhere. She'd like to just have an iphone instead.

Do I go out and buy an iphone and put in her sim? She mostly uses the net and apps on the itouch. The phone is just for a few calls a week between the two of us.

Thank you.

You will need a Rogers iPhone, or an unlocked model, but I would highly suggest buying Rogers. You will be able to get phone and text functionality by simply installing her sim, but if she wants data you will have to subscribe to the $10/mo data plan and install the Speakout profile.

These iphones go for about $550. Can you suggest any other smartphone like the iphone with camera, games, web browsing that isn't overpriced like Apple products usually are?

Thank, Andrew.

Hi Sandie, I would suggest getting an iPhone 4 (not 4S), it is a great handset and can be hand on craigslist for far less that $550. I've seen them go for $350-400 on CL for last years model.

It's a great phone and holds up really well against the latest generation iPhone.

Hope that helps.

Actually if you compare the "no contract" price of any decent smartphone you will find that apple really isn't really overpriced. That said, they aren't cheap. I would suggest looking at a used iPhone. As your daughter is using a 1616 right now, I would imagine she would be thrilled with an iPhone 3G which can be had for well under $200. The iPhone 3GS is a much better phone and good examples can be had under $250 (just bought one for my daughter). The iPhone 4 as the previous poster said, is a great phone, but even if you luck out and find one for $350, its still a lot of money.

ios while is still a better OS than android, I would adice against getting anything which is not iPhone4+.

Samsung Gio/Ace for example can be purchased brand new for ~100, no contract. They are better than 3G and may be even 3GS(that I am sure is up to debate).

I got the Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) for $200 off Craigslist/Kijiji.

It has a better looking and bigger screen than the iPhone4, and a faster processor (supposedly). All in all, it's a really really good phone for the price.

Definitely look around Kijiji, even if it's used. If it's brand new, they might go at $250-300.

Inspect the phone thoroughly before purchasing.

Good luck!
